Self-Managed Superannuation Funds
It is an interesting fact that four Self Managed Superannuation Fund (SMSF) are set up every hour in Australia. The major reasons driving the increase in popularity of SMSF lies in the members having;
- Greater Control over their Super
- Greater flexibility in respect of the investments the fund can make
- Ability to maximise investment returns compared to industry funds and minimise tax
- The ability to reduce and minimise the fees and costs usually imposed upon superfunds
- Maximum flexibility in establishing and managing pensions, including account based, transition to retirement and term allocated pensions
- The ability to own business real property in your superannuation fund which can assist you and your business.
By setting up your own SMSF, you can control and decide upon how your retirement savings are invested and managed. With an SMSF you have other investment options not normally available through industry and institutional superannuation funds including the ability to buy residential and commercial properties, shares, bonds, precious metals and other exotic investments.
The flexibility of your SMSF allows you to invest in a wide range of asset classes gives you the ultimate in flexibility and allows you to identify and seize upon investment opportunities with the view of maximising your superfund's long term investment returns.
Another benefit of a SMSF is that you can have up to four members in the one fund which allows you to pool your resources and minimise the overall cost per member. As you control your SMSF you have direct control over your investments and have the ability to adapt quickly to any changes in the market or new opportunities.
Based on a 2009 Federal Government report into SMSF's it was found that over a three year period (2006-2008) outperformed APRA regulated funds measured at a whole of industry level. The same report also found that operating costs or fees attached to running a SMSF were also lower when compared to Industry and Retail funds.
Depending on your circumstances and the funds available for investment, a SMSF could be the perfect vehicle for you to manage your retirement savings and maximise its potential. If you would like to discuss whether a SMSF is best for you and your circumstances – please contact Jason Murray for a free initial meeting where we can consider your financial goals in greater detail.
It is an interesting fact that four Self Managed Superannuation Fund (SMSF) are being set up every hour in Australia.
The reason for the increase in popularity of SMSF's lie in your ability to manage and control your own investments along with a greater degree of flexibility in respect of the type of assets that your SMSF can own compared to an industry or institutional fund.

In addition to being able to set up your fund within 24 hours we also provide our clients with a fixed fee for setting up all SMSF which means that there are no hidden costs and no surprises.
At the end of each financial year, each SMSF will need to prepare financial statements to provide to its members and prepare an income tax return to determine how much income tax is payable to the ATO.
Whilst this may seem overwhelming, at ACG we can attend to the preparation and lodgement of your SMSF accounts with ease by utilising our Class Super software which streamlines the reporting process and provides members with real time information regarding the financial position and performance of the fund via our secure web login.
If you would like to get access to more relevant and timely advice in respect of your SMSF and have someone attend to all of the end of year administration issues associated with the fund then contact us today for an obligation free fixed price quotation.
Every SMSF needs an annual audit by an independent auditor to ensure that it complies with all the rules and regulations governing Superannuation Funds. If Trustee's get it wrong it could mean that your SMSF becomes a non-complying fund and in the worse case scenario loose its concessional tax treatment resulting in the fund having to pay 46.5% in tax upon the value of the assets in the fund.
At ACG, we have streamlined the audit process so that you do not have to do any work in respect of finding an approved auditor and have even negotiated a fixed price for the audit in advance.
We submit all the accounting and tax records to the auditor via our class super system which streamlines the audit and allows the audit to be completed in the minimum possible amount of time.
Upon finalisation of the audit, the auditor will either provide an unqualified audit opinion stating that the fund has complied with all regulations or where breaches in compliance have been identified, we will discuss these with you to help the fund get back on track and rectify any issues should this be the case.
Setting up a SMSF is just the first step towards managing and maximising the potential of your superfund. The key to the superfund's success will be in respect of maximising your investment returns over the long term and managing the underlying risk of your investments.
